Bishop to Open Synod’s Diocesan Phase

MONTEREY – On Sunday, 21 November 2021, the Most Rev. Daniel E. Garcia, 5th Bishop of Monterey in California, will officially open the Synod on Synodality for the Diocese of Monterey at the 12pm Mass at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church Street.

The “Synod on Synodality” is a two-year process of listening and dialogue that was opened in Rome on 9-10 October 2021. This synodal process will conclude in 2023. Pope Francis has invited the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for her life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium”.

This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), “is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission”.
